A checklist for "Don’t tase me, bro!” news

The Andrew Meyer episode at the University of Florida has the social news phenomenon down to a checklist. It's worth studying.

The social news formula (in no particular order):

  1. Post a video on Youtube. Chris Albrecht on NewTeeVee: Of course it’s there. What else would you do with it? Put it in a manila envelope and send it to your local paper? This isn’t the fifties. Or even the nineties.
  2. Raise awareness on Facebook.
  3. Do a Web site.
  4. Mainstream media coverage
  5. Blogger buzz happens.

Get used to covering news that happens this way.

And, we need to train our citizen journalists better on how to shoot video ... hold the camera still.

That said, would rather have this in this state than not. Shocking stuff.

Yep, in some cases the story will rise above the storytelling.

Is it me or are police officers using the "shock method" a little too frequently? I've seen countless video's of people being tazed for what seems to be a harmless interaction with the cops.

You're just seeing more video ... my bet is, happening at the same rate as before, if not less, it just wasn't as easy to get video before.

I will admit however, it is pretty funny on an infant t-shirt
